A dispute broke out over the succession. The three contenders therefore made their way to the six men who had been entrusted with choosing the new king, and soon each pair of the six was championing one of the three. When the sages and men of sound judgment saw what was happening, they said, “People of the six to whom the choice has been assigned, your word has splintered and your views have diverged. Yet in your very presence today stands a man who is the finest of your age, whose judgment is above suspicion and from whose choice good fortune and blessing are expected. Whomever he points to among you, surrender the matter to him.”
