64 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Muhammad ibn al-Husayn narrated to me; al-Hasan ibn al-Rabiʿ narrated to me; and Muhammad ibn Subayḥ narrated to me, saying: “I asked ʿUmar ibn Dharr, ‘Which of the two do you find more remarkable for those who fear Allah: prolonged kamd (deep, lingering sorrow) or the shedding of tears?’ He replied, ‘Do you not realize that when the heart softens and tears flow, it is healed and finds relief, but when sorrow is bottled up it chokes and makes one miserly? Therefore, continued inner sorrow strikes me as the more remarkable of the two for them.’
