- ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn told me; he said: Mūsā b. ʿĪsā told me; he said: al-Walīd b. Muslim told me that
he once saw a man whose appearance was grimy and whose clothes were filthy. Al-Walīd said, “So I asked him, ‘Why do I not see you dressed the way Muslims usually dress?’
“He replied, ‘And what, exactly, do you find so objectionable? Perhaps you mean a neatly dyed beard and spotless garments?’
“I said, ‘Yes, that is what I meant.’
“At this he burst into tears and said, ‘Then how would my grief over the calamity of the sins I have already committed—Allah is my witness—ever be recognized?’
“And with that he collapsed unconscious.”
