50 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Muhammad ibn al-Ḥusayn told me, and he said: Yazīd ibn Khalīfah, the silk-seller, related to me, saying, “I heard one of the devout say:
‘No polish burnishes the heart like sorrow, and nothing illumines it like remembrance (of Allah). The greatest matter that occupies the believer within himself—the very focus of his concern—is his final return. A believer, with respect to his Lord, is always upon good; yet how worthless an implement it is for a believer to lean on hope that is not mingled with fear.’”
