178 – Muhammad ibn Idris narrated to me; ʿAbd al-ʿAziz al-Qurashi, the client (mawla) of ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Samurah—one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—narrated to me and said: ʿAmmar Abū al-Muʿtamir related to us; he said: I heard Bishr ibn Mansur say, “I asked ʿAtaʾ al-Sulaymi, ‘O ʿAtaʾ, what is the source of this grief of yours?’

He replied, ‘Wayhaka—woe to you! Death is hanging around my neck, the grave is my dwelling, on the Day of Resurrection will be my station, across the bridge over Hell lies my path, and as for my Lord, I do not know what He will do with me.’

Then he drew a deep breath and lost consciousness, so that he missed five prayers. When he regained his senses he said, ‘If my mind has departed, can anything still be feared for me?’ He then fainted once more and missed two prayers.
