171 – ʿAlī narrated to me; he said: Asad related; he said: Mubārak ibn Faḍālah reported: I heard al-Ḥasan say:
“By Allah, no believer wakes up in this world without feeling sorrow. And how could the believer not grieve when he has been told by Allah Most High that he will inevitably pass by Hell, yet he has not been told that he will safely come away from it? By Allah, he will most certainly witness in his religion what distresses him, and he will certainly witness in his worldly life what distresses him. He will be wronged, yet he will not retaliate, seeking the reward that is with Allah Most High. Thus he remains sorrowful in this world for as long as he dwells in it; but when he leaves it—meaning, when he returns to ease and honour—his sorrow will cease.”
