169 – Muhammad ibn Idrīs narrated to me; he said: I heard ʿAbdah ibn Sulaymān say: Musʿab ibn Māhān informed us that Sufyān al-Thawrī said, “Sorrow has departed from the people. You may see a man standing in prayer, yet you detect in him no sign of grief or fear.” He added, “In former times a man would finish the prayer and then sit down, his prayer having set his heart ablaze—overcome with sadness.”
