141 — ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Ahmad ibn Abi ʿUbayd al-Warrāq related to me, from Muhammad ibn ʿUmar al-Aslamī, who said: Muhammad ibn Abi Humayd related to me, saying:
ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb asked Mutammim ibn Nuwayrah, “How far has your grief for your brother gone?” He replied, “For a whole year I did not sleep at night until morning. Whenever I saw a fire lit during the night, I thought my soul would leave me, for it reminded me of my brother. He used to order a fire to be kept burning until daybreak, fearing that a traveller might pass the night nearby without hospitality. Whenever a wayfarer saw the fire, he would make for the man who had kindled it. And when a guest arrived at midday, he rejoiced at him more than people rejoice when someone dear returns from a distant journey.” ʿUmar said, “How noble he was!”
