140 — ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Muhammad ibn Abī Mūsā, the freedman of Aktal ibn Shammākh al-ʿUklī, related to me, from ʿUbaydah ibn Humayd, from al-Qāsim ibn Maʿn, who said:
ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb said, “May Allah have mercy on Zayd! He emigrated before I did and was martyred before I was. Whenever the winds blow from the direction of al-Yamāmah, they bring me his elegy; and whenever I recall the verse of Mutammim ibn Nuwayrah, I remember him.”
Others, besides Muhammad, relate it with the wording: “except that it stirs within me a pang of longing,” and he recited:
We were as Jadhīmah’s two boon companions for many a year,
till it was said, “Never shall the pair be split apart.”
But once we were parted, it seemed that I and Mālik—
though long together—had not passed a single night side by side.
