Al-Hamm wa-l-HuznIbn Abi al-Dunya

133 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn related to me; al-Ṣalt ibn Ḥakīm related to me; and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Marzūq told me:

“I once asked ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Rawwād, ‘What is the finest act of worship?’ He replied, ‘To remain in continual sorrow, night and day.’”

Al-Ṣalt added: “ʿAbd Allāh ibn Marzūq looked like a bewildered man, as though he had lost something dear. He had a few long strands of hair beside his temples; whenever he was moved to remembrance, he would run his fingers through them or pull at them, and tears would pour from his eyes.”
