113 - ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us—Khalaf ibn Hishām informed us, from Abū Shihāb al-Ḥannāṭ, from Layth, from Thābit al-Bunānī—who said:

Gabriel came to Joseph in the prison, and Joseph recognized him and asked, “O angel whose scent is wholesome, whose garments are pure, who is honored by his Lord, do you have any news of Jacob?”

He answered, “Yes. He has wept over you until he lost his sight.”

Joseph continued, “How intense has his sorrow become?”

Gabriel replied, “Like the sorrow of seventy bereaved mothers.”

Joseph then asked, “And what reward does he receive for that?”

Gabriel said, “The reward of one hundred martyrs.”
