70 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us. He said: Muhammad likewise informed me; Zayd ibn Musa related to me, saying: “I asked a monk, ‘To what point does sorrow reach?’ He replied, ‘To kamd (consuming anguish).’ I said, ‘And to what point does kamd reach?’ He answered, ‘To the destruction of life itself.’ I asked, ‘How so?’ He said, ‘Sorrow strips the body of its excess matter—from the hip and elsewhere—until scrofulous filth forms on one’s skin and bones. The pains then pile up on the heart because of the ceaseless urgings of thought that sorrow unleashes; the heart festers and ulcerates. Should it become parched, it hardens, and then delirium follows—that is death. And when the two coincide, it is a sickness for which no remedy can avail.’
