77 – Abū Bakr ibn Muḥammad ibn Hāniʾ narrated to us; Abū Bakr ibn Abī al-Aswad narrated to us; Ḥumayd—meaning Ibn al-Aswad—reported to us, from Ibn Jurayj, who said: ʿAṭāʾ stated, “Begin with the slaughter before the shaving, and the ʿaqīqah (post-birth sacrifice) is to be performed for the child on his seventh day; if that day passes, then on the next seventh.” He also said, “Eat from it and offer portions as gifts.”
I asked ʿAṭāʾ, “What are the two equivalent animals (al-mukāfiʾatān)?” He replied, “Two of the same kind. Sheep are preferable to me over goats, and their males are dearer to me than their females.” This represents ʿAṭāʾ’s personal opinion.
