74 – Abu Khaythamah narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Ṣamad narrated to us; Hammām narrated to us; Qatādah, through al-Ḥasan, from Samurah, who reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Every newborn boy is held in pledge by his ʿaqīqah: an animal is sacrificed for him on his seventh day, his head is shaved, and blood is smeared.” Qatādah was asked, “How is the blood smeared?” He replied, “Some wool from the sacrificial animal is taken, the jugular veins of the ʿaqīqah are touched with it, and it is then placed on the child’s head. When a thread-like trickle appears, it is washed off and the head is shaved.” ⦗220⦘
