574 – Ahmad ibn Jamil al-Marwazi narrated to us; ʿAbdullah ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us; Yunus reported, from al-Zuhri who said: Humayd ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿAwf told us that his mother—Umm Kulthum bint ʿUqbah ibn Abi Muʿayṭ—had informed him that she heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“Someone who brings reconciliation between people by saying something good or conveying something good is not a liar.”
Ibn Shihab (al-Zuhri) added: “I never heard him permit what people call lying except in three situations: in war, in making peace between people, and in what a man says to his wife or a woman says to her husband.”
٥٧٤ - حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ جَمِيلٍ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ، أَنَّ أُمَّهُ وَهِيَ أُمُّ كُلْثُومٍ بِنْتُ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ أَبِي مُعَيْطٍ أَخْبَرَتْهُ أَنَّهَا سَمِعَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: «لَيْسَ الْكَاذِبُ الَّذِي يُصْلِحُ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ فَيَقُولُ خَيْرًا أَوْ يَنْمِي خَيْرًا» قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ: وَلَمْ أَسْمَعْهُ يُرَخِّصُ فِيمَا يَقُولُ النَّاسُ فِي الْكَذِبِ إِلَّا فِي الثَّلَاثِ: الْحَرْبِ، وَالْإِصْلَاحِ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ، وَحَدِيثِ الرَّجُلِ امْرَأَتَهُ وَحَدِيثِ الْمَرْأَةِ زَوْجَهَا
