573 – al-Walīd ibn Shujāʿ narrated to us; Ibn Wahb narrated to me; Usāma ibn Zayd al-Laythī informed me, from Nāfiʿ who said:

Ibn Rawāḥah had a wife, and he was always on his guard with her. He also owned a slave girl, and he lay with the girl. His wife confronted him—afraid that he had indeed done so—and he exclaimed, “Subḥān Allah!” She replied, “Then recite something for me, for you are junub (in a state of major ritual impurity).” So he recited:

[al-Baḥr al-Ṭawīl]
“I bear witness, by Allah’s leave, that Muhammad is
The Messenger of the One who is above the heavens, exalted on high;
And that Abū Yaḥyā and Yaḥyā—both alike—
Perform a deed in His religion that will never be accepted.”
