560 – Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us; Saʿid ibn ʿUfayr narrated to us; Yahya ibn Ayyub narrated to me, from Ibn al-Hād, from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim, from Abu Salamah, from ʿAʾishah, who said:

“I went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the expedition known as the second Badr. When we reached al-Ṣafraʾ, in the midst of the arak trees, I left the path to take care of a need of mine. Suddenly I was startled by a lone rider descending toward me—it was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He came up, made my camel kneel for me, and then lay down to rest.

When I had finished and returned I asked, ‘Shall I mount?’ He said, ‘Come, let me race you.’ ⦗758⦘ I knew as soon as he said that that he meant to let me win. So I threw my cloak behind my back and tucked one edge of it into my lap. Then I traced a line on the ground with my foot and said, ‘Come, let us stand at this line.’

He looked at my face, seemingly amused, and gestured with his hand. We both stood at the line, and I asked, ‘May I go?’ He replied, ‘Go.’ We set off, and he outran me and went on ahead. He then said, ‘This cancels out the race of the day of Dhī al-Majāz.’

Later I remembered that when I was a young girl my father used to follow me. On one occasion I had something in my hand; he asked me for it and I refused. He tried to take it, so I dashed off. He came after me, but I outran him and entered the house.”
