552 – ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd narrated to me; Abū al-Mughīrah, al-Naḍr ibn Ismāʿīl, reported to us, from ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ayman al-Makkī, who said:
Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended to travel, he would draw lots among his wives. On one occasion he did so and the lot fell to ʿĀʾishah and Zaynab bint Jahsh. When the caravan set off, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would urge his mount forward until he reached ʿĀʾishah and would ride alongside her.
Zaynab then said to ʿĀʾishah, “Exchange your camel for mine.” She agreed. When they moved on again, ʿĀʾishah was riding Zaynab’s camel. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked toward the camel that ʿĀʾishah normally rode, so he drove his mount toward it; but when he drew level, there was Zaynab on ʿĀʾishah’s camel. Feeling shy, he rode alongside her instead.
When they halted, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to ʿĀʾishah, and she said, “O ⦗748⦘ Muhammad, you claim that you belong with me?” He replied, “And are you still in doubt about that?” I repeated the question several times, whereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “If I were to say that a jealous woman cannot tell the top of a valley from its bottom, I would be telling the truth.”
