528 – ʿAbd al-Muʿtāl ibn Ṭālib narrated to us; Abū Ismāʿīl al-Muʾaddib Ibrāhīm ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; from al-Ḥajjāj ibn Dīnār; from Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī; from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—a woman arrived and said, “Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah. I have come as the envoy of the women. Allah is the Lord of men and the Lord of women, and Adam is the father of men and the father of women. Allah has sent you to men and to women alike. When men go forth in the path of Allah and are killed, they remain alive with their Lord, sustained and rejoicing in what Allah has granted them. Even when they merely set out, they receive the reward you know of. As for us, we stay behind serving them and remaining in our homes—so what reward is there for us?”
The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—replied: “Convey my greetings to the women and tell them: obedience to the husband equals all of that, yet only a few of you do it. A man’s right rests upon his wife.”
