500 – Abu Khaythamah related to us; Wakiʿ related to us; Sufyan related to us, from Abu Ishaq, from Haniʾ ibn Haniʾ, who said:
A finely-dressed woman came to ʿAli (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, “O Commander of the Believers, what do you say about a woman who is neither without a husband nor truly with one?”
A little later her husband arrived, stooped over and shuffling along, and asked, “What is this woman saying?” Someone replied, “You can see for yourself, O Commander of the Believers, how she looks.”
ʿAli then asked the man, “Do you make use of a mūsā—a razor?” He answered, “No.” ʿAli asked, “Not even something made of wood?” He again answered, “No.” ʿAli said, “You have ruined yourself and ruined her.” Then he turned to the woman and said, “Fear Allah and be patient.”
