497 – Al-Walīd ibn Shujāʿ narrated to me; a man who had heard Mujālid narrated to me, reporting from al-Shaʿbī, who said:
ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with him—used to say, “What are these trifles? Women distract you from the enemy. It is enough for a wife that she be approached once during every ṭuhr (period of purity).”
A man repeated those words to his family, and his wife asked, “What is wrong with you, Abū So-and-so?” He replied, “May Allah have mercy on ʿUmar; he used to say such-and-such.” She retorted, “So you have preserved nothing of ʿUmar’s counsels except this?”
