“There was a dispute between my grandfather and my grandmother. My grandfather said, ‘You and I will abide by ʿUmar’s ruling.’ She asked, ‘And what was ʿUmar’s ruling?’ He replied, ‘ʿUmar ruled that if a man comes to his wife once every month—or once in every period of purity—he has fulfilled her right.’ She retorted, ‘People have abandoned ʿUmar’s ruling; am I and you to uphold it alone?’”
