493 – Abu Khaythamah transmitted to us; Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; his father narrated to us, from Ibn Isḥāq; Hishām ibn ʿUrwah told me, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
“Khawlah bint Ḥakīm ibn Umayyah ibn Ḥārithah ibn Awqaṣ al-Sulamiyyah—who was married to ʿUthmān ibn Maẓʿūn—came in to see me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ noticed how unkempt she looked and said, ‘ʿĀʾishah, how dishevelled Khawlah appears!’
I replied, ‘Messenger of Allah, she is like a woman without a husband. Her husband fasts by day and prays through the night, so it is as though she has no husband; she has therefore neglected and forgotten herself.’
She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then sent for ʿUthmān ibn Maẓʿūn. When he arrived, the Prophet said, ‘ʿUthmān, is this an aversion to my sunnah? ⦗683⦘’
He answered, ‘No, by Allah; rather I am seeking your sunnah.’
The Prophet said, ‘I sleep and I pray; I fast and I marry women. So fear Allah, ʿUthmān. Your family has a right over you, your own self has a right over you, and your private parts have a right over you. Therefore fast and break your fast, sleep and pray.’”
