Al-Nafaqa 'ala al-'IyalIbn Abi al-Dunya

485 — Al-Ḥasan b. al-Ṣabbāḥ narrated to us; Makki b. Ibrāhīm narrated to us; Mūsā b. ʿUbaydah narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Dīnār, from Ibn ʿUmar, that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“O people, women in your care are like captives; they have no authority to secure benefit or ward off harm for themselves. You have taken them under Allah’s trust and have made their private parts lawful to you by Allah’s word. They therefore have rights over you. Part of your right over them is that they must not allow anyone you dislike to tread upon your bedding, nor may they disobey you in what is reasonable. If they do so, then their food and clothing are due to them in kindness. Do not strike them; but if you must strike them, then strike them with a blow that is not injurious.”
