484 — ʿAlī b. al-Jaʿd narrated to us; Ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, from Iyās b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Dhubāb, that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “Do not strike the female servants of Allah.”
He (the narrator) said: Then ʿUmar came to him and said, “O Messenger of Allah, the women have become bold toward their husbands.” So the Messenger of Allah gave permission, and they were beaten. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—then declared, “Seventy women have gone round to the family of Muhammad, every one of them complaining about her husband. Those men are by no means the best among you.”
