ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd related to us; Ibn ʿUyaynah related to us, from Abū Talq, from a man who heard Jarīr say:
A man once complained to ʿUmar about the difficulties he faced with women. ʿUmar replied, “We experience the same. I even step out to relieve myself and she says, ‘You are only going to So-and-so in order to stare at the daughters of such-and-such a tribe!’ ”
Ibn Masʿūd then said, “Commander of the Believers, has it not reached you that Abraham complained to Allah about the sharp tongues of his wives? Allah, Exalted is He, revealed to him: ‘Indulge her in what she does so long as you see no disgrace in her religion, for woman was created from a crooked rib.’ ”
ʿUmar responded, “Allah has placed in your everyday concerns a great deal of knowledge.”
