Al-Nafaqa 'ala al-'IyalIbn Abi al-Dunya

461 – Ishaq ibn Ismaʿil narrated to us; Yahya ibn ʿIsa al-Ramli narrated to us; al-Aʿmash narrated to us. He said: Salim ibn Abi al-Jaʿd used to prepare pickled relishes and similar dishes like those you make in your own homes, and then he would give them away in charity. His family said to him, “You go off and leave nothing for us?” He replied, “For me to depart with goodness and leave you with hardship is dearer to me than to depart with hardship and leave you with goodness.”
