444 – Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated to me; Muḥammad ibn Dāwud al-Ḥarrānī narrated to me, from ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus, who said: “Sufyān al-Thawrī would admire a man, but once he learned that the man was burdened with many dependents, the man lost all standing in his eyes. I asked him about this, and he replied, ‘I have never seen anyone supporting a large household without finding him confused and inconsistent.’”
