43 – Muhammad ibn Abi ʿUmar al-Makki narrated to us; Hisham ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Yahya ibn Saʿid, from ʿAmrah bint ʿAbd al-Rahman, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “For a boy the ʿaqīqah (newborn sacrifice) is two equivalent sheep, and for a girl one sheep.” ⦗182⦘
She also said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the ʿaqīqah for al-Hasan and al-Husayn with two sheep; he slaughtered them on the seventh day, named the boys, and ordered that the impurity be removed from their heads.
She continued: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, “Slaughter in his name and say: ‘In the name of Allah; O Allah, from You and to You—this is the ʿaqīqah of so-and-so.’”
She added: In the pre-Islamic period they would dye a tuft of cotton with the sacrifice’s blood on the day of the ʿaqīqah, and after shaving the child’s head they would place it on top. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed them to substitute the blood with khuluq (a perfumed saffron paste).
