410 – Muḥammad ibn Ḥassān al-Samtī narrated to us; al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ narrated to us, from Muṭṭariḥ ibn Yazīd, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Zahr, from ʿAlī ibn Yazīd, from al-Qāsim, from Abū Umāmah: ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “It is not permissible for a believer to enter the ḥammām (public bathhouse) unless he is wearing a miʾzar (waist-wrapper), nor is it permissible for a woman to enter the bathhouse except because of illness. ʿĀʾishah, Mother of the Believers, related to me while reclining on her bedding. She said, ‘My beloved, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, related to me on this very bedding of mine, saying: “When a woman removes her khimār (head-covering) in a place other than her husband’s home, she tears away the veil that stands between her and Allah, and its consequences will not be checked until they reach the Throne.”’
