Al-Nafaqa 'ala al-'IyalIbn Abi al-Dunya

389 – Muhammad ibn Idris narrated to me; Muhammad ibn Bakkar ibn Bilal, the judge of Damascus, narrated to us; Saʿid ibn Bishr narrated to us, from Qatadah, from Abu Maymunah, from Abu Hurayrah:

A woman once came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) accompanied by her two daughters while he was eating dates. He gave her three dates. She handed two of them to her daughters and kept one for herself. When the girls had eaten their dates, they looked at her expectantly, so she split her own date between them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Allah has certainly forgiven her; she gave what was due and fed others despite her hardship.”
