Al-Nafaqa 'ala al-'IyalIbn Abi al-Dunya

379 – Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated to me, from Ibn ʿĀʾishah, who said:

I was informed that Ayūb would often tell his companions, “See to it that your children and your households are nurtured upon righteousness and proper conduct, and do not let their eyes covet what is in other people’s hands.”

He kept a small basket with which he would hurry to the market every day, purchasing fruit and whatever necessities his wife and children required. He also used to say, “The finest generosity is anything that earns a reward.”

Ayūb had some poor relatives; he would personally take their support money and clothing to them. Someone once said to him, “Why not just send it with someone else?” He replied, “Taking it to them myself makes my heart more compassionate toward them.”
