349 – Kāmil ibn Ṭalḥah narrated to us; Abū Bilāl narrated to us, from Ibn Buraydah: Muʿāwiyah sent for Daghfal and questioned him about the Arabic language, the genealogies of the Arabs, and the stars. When he found him to be a man of learning, he asked, “Daghfal, how have you preserved all this?” He replied, “With an inquisitive tongue and an intelligent heart; the bane of knowledge is forgetfulness.” Muʿāwiyah then said, “Go on ahead—meaning before my son Yazīd—and teach him Arabic, the genealogies of Quraysh, the constellations, and the genealogies of people.”
