342 – Al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated: Maslama ibn ʿAbd al-Malik gave the following counsel to the tutor of his children:
“I have joined your wing to my arm and accepted you as a companion to my sons. Guide them well and their uprightness will remain secure under you. In disciplining them, take the easy course and keep clear of harshness. Teach them noble speech, shield them from sparring with the low-born, and forbid them from seeking renown for what is not truly theirs. Be for them a compassionate steward and a gentle instructor; your kindness will win you their love, their goodwill, and a praiseworthy outcome. Whatever benefit your influence and sound training produce in them, I shall repay with my favorable regard, abundant generosity, and considerate care.”
