315 – Muhammad ibn ʿImrān al-Ḍabbī narrated this to me. He said: I heard my father relate:
Sufyān al-Thawrī once passed by Ziyād ibn Kathīr while the latter was lining up the young boys for the prayer. He was instructing them, “Stand straight, keep balanced, align your shoulders and your feet. Lean on your left foot and keep the right erect. Place your hands on your knees, and do not give the taslīm (closing salutation) until the imam has given salām to both sides.”
Sufyān stopped to watch and then remarked, “It has reached me that proper etiquette extinguishes the Lord’s anger.”
