308 – ʿUthmān ibn Maʿbad narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn Abān al-Warrāq related to us; Sahl ibn Shuʿayb reported to me, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Zubayd al-Yāmī, from his father, who said: “Allah has a sign by which the angels recognize His anger. Whenever He becomes angry, the Throne quakes until it looks like a billowing cloud of smoke; sometimes it remains so and sometimes it subsides. When it subsides, the angels say to one another, ‘This is because the children are being taught the Qur’an in the mosques.’”
