29 – Abu ʿAbd Allah Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Ziyad al-Bahili narrated to us; Baqiyyah ibn al-Walid narrated to us. He said:
I met Ibrahim ibn Adham, who asked, “What has brought you here?” I replied, “The pursuit of hadith.” He said, “When was the last time you visited me? I am fond of hadith.” I said, “Give me one hadith—perhaps Allah will let me benefit from it.” He said, “Abu Thabit related to me—and if only you had seen Abu Thabit!—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘My Creator suffices me against His creation; my religion suffices me against my worldly life.’”
He then said, “Abu Muhammad, do you have dependents?” I answered, “Yes. ⦗165⦘” He continued, “When your daughter or your wife startles you, crying, ‘Bread! Bread!’ while the loaf is still in the basket, and you rise, take it out, and hand it to her, the reward you gain in that moment is greater than the reward you imagine I receive in what you see me doing.” I asked, “What keeps you from doing the same?” He replied, “Weakness.”
