255 – ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us, from ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal, from Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, who said: Al-Munṣafiq once saw ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) kissing his son. He exclaimed, “You kiss your child while you are the Caliph? If I were Caliph, I would never kiss my child!” ʿUmar replied, “How am I to blame if Allah has stripped mercy from your heart? Allah shows mercy only to those of His servants who are themselves merciful.”
