17 – ʿUbayd Allah b. ʿUmar narrated to us; Ḥammād b. Zayd narrated to us, from ʿĀṣim b. Bahdalah, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared: “The best charity is that which still leaves the donor self-sufficient; the upper hand is better than the lower hand. Begin with those you maintain: your wife will say, ‘Spend on me or divorce me’; your slave will say, ‘Spend on me or sell me’; and your child will say, ‘To whom will you leave us?’”
