164 – Al-Mufaddal ibn Ghassan related to us; ‘Abd Allah ibn Bakr al-Sahmi told me: A number of people were in the company of Iyās ibn Muʿāwiya when the conversation turned to fathers and sons—who is more dutiful if both are dutiful? They all agreed that the father shows greater dutifulness, provided he himself is righteous. Iyās responded, “I differ with you. When both are dutiful, the son is the more dutiful, because a father’s kindness is instinctive, whereas the son’s kindness is the result of conscious effort to discharge the duty Allah has imposed upon him.”
