155 – Hārūn ibn Sufyān narrated to me, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bakr al-Sahmī; Jābir ibn ʿUmāra related that Umayya ibn Abī al-Ṣalt once reproached a son of his and said:
I nourished you an infant and reared you a youth;
You fed on what I earned for you and drank your fill.
Whenever the night brought you pain, I never slept;
For your complaint I kept vigil, tossing and turning.
My very soul feared death for you, though it knows
That death has an appointed time that cannot be delayed.
When at last you reached the age and the limit
To which all my hopes for you had aspired,
You paid me back with harshness and cold disdain,
As though you were the benefactor, the giver of favors. ⦗314⦘
Would that—since you failed to honor a father’s right—
You had at least behaved as any neighboring neighbor would.
