Al-Nafaqa 'ala al-'IyalIbn Abi al-Dunya

136 – Al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Ḥasan, Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn, and others narrated to us. They said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bakr al-Sahmī informed us; Bishr Abū Naṣr related to me that Asmāʾ ibn Khārija married off his daughter. When he was about to send her to her husband, he came to her and said:

“My dear daughter, although the women are better suited than I to refine your character, I must still counsel you. My daughter, be a servant to your husband and he will become a slave to you. Do not cling to him so closely that he grows weary of you, nor keep so far from him that you become burdensome to him and he to you. And be as I once said to your mother:

[long metre]
Take gentle pardon from me and my love will endure;
Speak not at the height of my anger’s fierce roar.
I have learned that when love and injury share one breast,
Love will not linger long—very soon it is no more.”
