135 – Bishr ibn Muʿādh al-ʿAqadī narrated to me; Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Qurashī narrated to me, from Abū al-Miqdām, who said:
“Among Quraysh it was considered proper for the suitor to speak at length, while the family receiving the proposal should keep their reply brief. I was present when Muhammad ibn al-Walīd ibn ʿUtbah ibn Abī Sufyān asked ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz for the hand of his sister, Umm ʿUmar bint ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz. Muhammad ibn al-Walīd delivered words worthy of being committed to memory, whereupon ʿUmar said:
‘All praise is due to Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, and may Allah bless Muhammad, the Seal of the prophets. To proceed: Your eagerness has brought you to us, and our eagerness for you has led us to respond. Whoever has entrusted you with his noble daughter has thought well of you; he has chosen you and preferred you over all others.’
Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh added: I was informed that when the marriage was concluded, ʿUmar said to his wife Fāṭimah, ‘Teach this young lady the knowledge you possess, for I admire him more than you do.’ She replied, ‘Do you not feel any jealousy?’ He said, ‘Jealousy applies only to what is unlawful; with what is lawful there is no jealousy,’ ⦗287⦘ citing the statement of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to ʿAlī and Fāṭimah: ‘Do not be hasty until I enter upon you both.’
