Al-Nafaqa 'ala al-'IyalIbn Abi al-Dunya

126 – Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Jarawī told me; Ayyūb ibn Suwayd narrated to us; Abū Zurʿa narrated: Sulaimān ibn ʿAbd al-Malik sought Hāniʾ ibn Kulthūm’s daughter in marriage for his own son Ayyūb, who was then the heir-apparent. Hāniʾ refused to give her to him. He returned home, summoned one of his cousins, and married her to him instead. Sulaimān remarked, “Had he been looking for worldly advantage, he would have married her to us.”
