Al-Nafaqa 'ala al-'IyalIbn Abi al-Dunya

112 – Abu Bakr al-‘Umari related to us; Abu Ya‘qub al-Madini related to us; from Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah: a Bedouin was making tawaf around the House as he kept saying:
O Lord, my little girls are burden enough—enough!
They have emptied my mind and eaten up my living;
if You give me another, You will have broken my heart.
‘Umar overheard him and asked, “How many daughters do you have?” He replied, “Four, O Commander of the Believers.” So ‘Umar ordered that he be granted a stipend of two dirhams each day.
