91 – Salamah ibn Shabib related to me; Sahl ibn ‘Asim ⦗59⦘ narrated to us; Muhammad ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us; ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid related to me, saying: I heard ‘Ata’ recount that Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) once spoke about the terrors of the Day of Resurrection and reflected upon them. He mentioned the Scales when they are set up, the Garden when it is brought near, the Fire when it is laid bare, the lines of angels, the folding up of the heavens, the pulverizing of the mountains, the darkening of the sun, and the scattering of the stars. Then he said, “How I wish I were a green shoot among this vegetation: some beast would come along, eat me, and that would be the end of me.” When this was reported to the Prophet ﷺ, the verse was revealed: “But for the one who fears standing before his Lord there are two gardens” (al-Rahman 46).
