9 – Ishaq ibn Isma‘il and Khalaf ibn Salim both narrated to us; they said: ‘Abd Allah ibn Numayr narrated to us; ‘Abd Allah ibn Muslim narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn ‘Ata’ ibn Khabbab, from his father, from his grandfather Khabbab ⦗26⦘, that Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) was once in his house when a bird—a dove or a small sparrow—alighted on a tree nearby. Abu Bakr looked at it and said, “Glad tidings for you, O bird! How blissful is your life upon that tree: you eat of its fruit, then you die and are nothing thereafter. If only I were in your place.”
