83 – ʿAlī ibn Abī Maryam narrated to us; he said, “I heard Abū ʿUbaydah ibn al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ say, ‘I heard Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ashʿath say, “I heard al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ say:
‘If I were given the choice between dying and then being shown the Resurrection—its terrors, the rising from the graves, and the Reckoning—and afterward entering Paradise, on the one hand, or being turned into a dog, living among dogs for my entire life until I died and became dust, on the other, I would choose to be that dog until I died and became dust, never seeing either Paradise or the Fire. How blissful Paradise is for its people, yet would I not thereby be spared the Resurrection and all its horrors?’”’
