78 – Ahmad ibn Ibrahim related to us; Rawh ibn ʿUbādah related to us, from Hajjaj al-Aswad—who was one of the outstanding men of his time—who said: “A man once voiced a wish, saying, ‘If only I possessed the renunciation of al-Hasan, the scrupulous piety of Ibn Sirin, the juridical insight of Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib, and the devotional worship of ʿAmir ibn ʿAbd Qays.’” Rawh added, “He also mentioned Mutarrif in connection with something I no longer recall.” They examined these qualities and discovered that all of them were present, in their entirety, in al-Hasan.
