70 – Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn told me; ʿUbayd ibn Isḥāq al-Ḍabbī told me; al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Maymūn told us, from al-Ḥakam ibn ʿUtaybah, from a man of the Murād tribe among the Salmānīs—whose kunya was Abū ʿAbd Allāh—who related ⦗51⦘:
Oways al-Qaranī passed by a fuller on an exceedingly cold day while the man was standing in water that reached the tops of his thighs. Out of pity for him as he stood there, Oways gestured with his hand like this—he extended it and moved it. The fuller said to him, “O Oways, if only that tree had never been created!”
٧٠ - حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ، حَدَّثَنِي عُبَيْدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الضَّبِّيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا الْعَلَاءُ بْنُ مَيْمُونٍ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ عُتَيْبَةَ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ حَدَّثَهُ مِنْ مُرَادٍ مِنَ السَّلْمَانِيِّينَ، قَالَ: وَيُكْنَى أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ ⦗٥١⦘: مَرَّ أُوَيْسٌ الْقَرَنِيُّ، عَلَى قَصَّارٍ، فِي يَوْمٍ شَدِيدِ الْبَرْدِ، وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ إِلَى أَصْلِ فَخِذَيْهِ فِي الْمَاءِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ أُوَيْسٌ بِيَدِهِ هَكَذَا، وَبَسَطَ يَدَهُ فَحَرَّكَهَا رَحْمَةً لَهُ، وَمِنْ قِيَامِهِ فِي الْمَاءِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ الْقَصَّارُ: يَا أُوَيْسُ، «لَيْتَ تِلْكَ الشَّجَرَةَ لَمْ تُخْلَقْ»
